SOUND ENCOUNTERS  is for advanced string students who play at or beyond the following minimum repertoire levels:

          Violin:          Corelli: La Folia & Handel Sonata No. 3 in F Major

          Viola:           Marcello Sonata in G Major

          Cello:           Vivaldi: Sonata in E Minor, Op. 14, No. 5

          Bass:            Orchestral experience

I. Collegiate Division

Students must be at the collegiate level or be graduates of high school as of Spring 2018.

II. Undergraduate Division

Advanced students of all ages through high school.

Note: Suzuki equivalencies to minimum repertoire level:

Violin - Book 6, Viola - Book 5, Cello - Book 5, Bass - Orchestral experience

Conducting with David Barg

Learn the basics about conducting techniques, score study and leadership.

Advanced Conducting with David Barg

Students who participated in Conducting in a prior year will go deeper into  conducting techniques, score study and concepts of leadership. 

Improvisation with Shane Borth and Ben Munoz

Students will learn the basics about improvising and will have opportunities to unleash their creativity through their instruments.

Piano Basics for String Players with Junko Garrett

Students with little or no piano background will learn basic piano skills, and play solo   and 4 hands pieces. 

Be Creative: Compose Music for Piano and Strings with Junko Garrett

Students will learn basic music theory and compose a piece for a piano and a string.   The class provides electronic pianos for each student.

"Dead White Guys" - Music History with Treesa Gold

From 500AD to present, this SOUND ENCOUNTERS thrill ride takes us through all of the dead  white guys who influenced western music and highlights some of the best works ever written for our instruments.

How to Prepare for and Take An Audition with Adrienne Sengpiehl

Learn and try some techniques to maximize your success in any audition process.

Piano Lessons with Junko Garrett

Private lessons for Intermediate or Advanced students who enroll in SOUND ENCOUNTERS as a string player. 

SOUND ENCOUNTERS Master Class Opportunities

SOUND ENCOUNTERS recitalist, Brian Lewis, will teach Violin Master Classes throughout the SOUND ENCOUNTERS program.

Master Classes will also be taught by guest artists:

     James SternUniversity of Maryland - violin   June 11 and June 12

     Hannah Collins,  The University of Kansas - cello  June 9th

     Viola TBA

Audition Details

1. Submit an unedited video of the applicant's performance with accompaniment of the selection to be worked on in Master Class.

Video submissions should be via Google Drive if possible.  A DVD will be accepted.

2. In the subject line of your video email, clearly state applicant's name. 

3. In the body of the email, include:

  • the student's name and address
  • the name of the artist(s) * with whom the student would like to have a Master Class
  • the teacher's name
  • the selection to be performed

        * Violinists who wish to be considered for both Lewis and Stern Master Classes should indicate that their recording should be considered for both classes. Only one application fee is necessary if considered for both.

4. Video must be received on or before April 17, 2018. The $40 application processing fee must be paid with your SOUND ENCOUNTERS registration.

5. Applicants will be notified as to their selection as participant or observer by May 1st or before.

6. Master Class performers will be assessed a participation fee of $85.00 upon notification of acceptance.

7. Master Class performers will be assigned rehearsal time with the Master Class accompanist.

8. Master Class applicants must be participants in the SOUND ENCOUNTERS program.

Please Note:  All SOUND ENCOUNTERS fees must be paid in FULL before the Master Class auditions can be considered.


Registration Fee = $50

Tuition = $700 

The registration fee is required per participant and it is NON-REFUNDABLE.

University Facility Fee = $100

** The University Facility Fee is required by the university per student for those students who are not utilizing the Housing and Meal plan listed below.

Housing and Meals 

Ottawa University dormitory housing is provided in suites with central living area and a bathroom for each suite of two bedrooms. Assignments will be made on a first-come / first-served basis. REGISTER EARLY. Prior notification of special needs is required so housing can be arranged to best accommodate needs. Indicate roommate requests on registration form. 

If staying in university housing, please bring towels, linens, blankets and pillows for all in your family.

Housing is available: Wednesday night, June 6 through Thursday, June 14.

Meals are available: supper, Wednesday, June 6 through supper, Thursday, June 14.

Cost for Housing and Meals :

Cost per Individual $650 per individual

     Family of 3 ( in same suite )TBD

     Family of 4 ( in same suite ) TBD

     Additional family members beyond 4 TBD

*   Note: Immediate family members only

*   Family members with more than 4 in the same suite should bring sleeping bags for additional family members.  ( Children 18 months and younger - no charge )

Please include an indication of any special dietary needs on your registration form.

Commuter Meal Cards

Commuter Meal Cards are available to off-campus participants and their family members. A meal card costs  $ 75  and entitles its holder to any 8 meals of his / her choosing throughout the week. Meals are also available on a cost per meal basis for participants living off campus and for guests. Note: The participant saves money by purchasing the meal card, if 8 meals are eaten.The Hetrick Dining Center is located in the NEW Gibson Student Center in the center of the OU campus. 

If not staying with family members, participants may request a roommate on the registration form. If a roommate is not specified, the SOUND ENCOUNTERS staff will assign one.

Please include an indication of dietary needs on your registration form.


Dr. Shinichi Suzuki established a graduation program which provides a process of polishing and reviewing certain pieces in the Suzuki repertoire to a very high level, recording those polished pieces, and having a group concert featuring the students and recognizing their achievements.

The Application Process

The application is  online

  • Before you register, please read through all of the camp  opportunities on this page.  

  • Print a copy of your registration form, by going to File, then Print on your computer before clicking Send Message to submit.

  • Once the registration forms are completed for each participant, proceed to the Payment Page where you will be able to pay for everything at one time. 
  • You will find simple to use pull-down menus where you can select your options and add them to your cart. 
  • For accuracy, refer to your copy of the registration form(s).

  • Once you have reviewed the items in your cart, you can make your payment through PayPal. 

  • Please Note:  Your registration forms cannot be processed until your payment process is accurate and complete.
